America’s dalliance with a neo-authoritarian, the man writes, is our responsibility, if not the fault of each one of us. What a well-reasoned, bolstered-by-fact essay.
As many have written (including yours truly), America is not quite the shining city on the hill its people like to believe. Alameddine spares but a paragraph of reasons why not. That alone makes his work worth reading.
As anyone who’s ever heard of a twelve-step program knows, the first step is admitting you have a problem. With Donald Trump, regardless of one’s own politics, we have a big problem.
