National security adviser Michael Flynn has resigned after reports he misled Trump administration officials about his contacts with Russia’s ambassador to the U.S.
Flynn’s departure less than one month into the Trump administration marks an extraordinarily early shakeup in the president’s senior team of advisers. Flynn was a loyal Trump supporter throughout the campaign, but his ties to Russia caused concern among other senior aides.
Extraordinary shake-up … I’d say so. The one person central to all of the White House’s national security operation violated the Logan Act, colluding with a foreign power on US foreign policy during the previous administration’s tenure, and lied about it to the vice president. And the VP embarrassed himself repeating the lies.
Now, if the strong suspicion that Mr. Trump had improper contacts with the Russian government turn out to be just as true as those that sent Flynn packing – well holy crap. We’ll truly have found a scandal “worse than Watergate.”
