Good for the United States (Peter Baker – The New York Times):
President Trump picked Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, a widely respected military strategist, as his new national security adviser on Monday, calling him “a man of tremendous talent and tremendous experience.”
Not so good for General McMaster:
General McMaster is seen as one of the Army’s leading intellectuals, first making a name for himself with a searing critique of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for their performance during the Vietnam War and later criticizing the way President George W. Bush’s administration went to war in Iraq.
General McMaster is an intellectual. Searing critiques and critical thinking are not Trump supporters’ strong suit. This makes them McMaster’s natural critics, as they’ve made clear their disdain for anyone who’s spent a lifetime learning in addition to doing.
From what I’ve read, McMaster is a good choice. From what I’ve seen of Trump’s supporters, and the man himself, hypocrisy is coin of their realm.
