A CNN/ORC poll finds that 65 percent of Americans think a special prosecutor should handle the investigation and 32 percent think Congress can handle it.
Broken down by party affiliation, only 43 percent of Republicans think a special prosecutor is necessary to handle the investigation, while 82 percent of Democrats and 67 percent of independents call for a special prosecutor.
This says less than appears.
It remains to be seen how many Americans support investigation of Mr. Trump’s Russian connections at all. It’s one thing to say a majority supports one method over the other. It’s another to show that the public wants an investigation at all. I’ve not seen polling on that question. The poll only indicates that 55% responding say they’re at least “somewhat concerned” about the growing scandal.
Although AG Sessions has recused himself from any investigation into the 2016 election, his acting deputy, Dana Boente, is the only official now who can appoint a special prosecutor. The evidence gathered by James Comey’s FBI will need to be overwhelming to force Boente’s hand.
